    Wooo! 100!

Don’t be too hard on Varick and Vekis (now just Varick), Billy. Think of it like this. Batman, when you get right down to it, is not as interesting as his villains. He’s just a brooding loner and when he does have a personality, he tends to be a jerk. The villains are much more colorful and add their own special brands of chaos to the setting. And yet, what would Batman be without Batman? It would just be a bunch of weird evil guys doing bad things and never getting caught. I mean, maybe there’s a story in there but it’s not what propelled the character of Batman to the heights he’s at now. Likewise, if everyone on the party was a weirdo or a raving loon like the other three members, it might get tiresome. It needs one guy who the audience can sympathize with and sort of be their advocate, the guy who says, “Yeah, I know, that’s weird, isn’t it?” because Koen sure as hell won’t.

And that’s not to say Varick is just a blank slate. He had a massive falling out with his Church that has had devastating consequences for this world, and it might only get worse from this point. He’s driven so much of the story and that’s not in spite of a lack of personality, but, I would argue, because of it. He didn’t want to turn against the Church, but he realized he couldn’t ignore the facts laid out in front of him however much they complicated his life.

    Anyway, favorite scene? Guiedbook. Hysterical.
